The Pavilion at the Tabernacle
Methodist Tabernacle, Salem Church Rd, Mathews, VA
This Pavilion is perfect for couples who envision a large barn wedding with plenty of hanging lights and the full rustic experience. The current Tabernacle was erected in 1922. However these grounds have been used for religious gatherings as early as the Civil War. It was used as a gathering place for women to pray for their husbands and sons away at war. Methodists acquired the site in 1879 and built the original tabernacle about half this size. It was intended as a gathering place for revivals, and evangelic services. As the crowds increased, the original site was built. Now you can observe the beautifully constructed 7,000sq ft pavilion under a “hipped roof holding” with 20 ft cathedral ceilings. The Pavilion sits privately on 7 acres of property. The site is listed on the National and Virginia Registers of Historic Places.
The Pavilion was purchased by the owners of White Dog Bistro, Mac and Jaycee Casale, in 2016. The Tabernacle is now professionally functioning as an event and wedding space that can hold up to 300 people. The original benches have been removed to allow for a very spacious room to hold both ceremony and reception.
