Mathews is home to a nice mix of restaurants that cater to just about any craving you may have on your visit. From fine dining to your picnic basket, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a list of local favorites all located within minutes of the Inn.
Southwind Pizza Café –
Located on Church street in Downtown Mathews within 5 miles of the Inn, Southwind has been a Mathews locals favorite for over 13 years. So much so, that we often refer to it as our “Local Pub”. Best known for their handmade hearth baked and award winning pizza featuring unique ingredients and flavor combinations, Southwind is actually NOT your average pizza joint but more like a cool café featuring diverse daily specials and specialty craft brews on tap and nice variety of wines. Lunch and dinner specials feature fresh local seafood and produce as well as creative options. They also cater to dietary needs of all kinds. From Vegetarian to Vegan to Gluten free and beyond. Just ask, and they can usually modify most of their offerings. Enjoy a meal on the front porch overlooking the historic courthouse green or meet new friends at the friendly bar area. Southwinds also has amazing and diverse bands which perform every other Saturday night starting @ 8. Every Thursday evening starting @ 6:30-7 they have “Jam Night” where several local musicians come together to make great music and good times. If you happen to play an instrument or sing and want to join in, they are always welcoming. We have had several guests perform on Jam Night, (some planned and some spontaneous), and all have had a great time! Of course it is always fun to just be a spectator as well.
Hours: Wednesday- Saturday 11:30- 9, (later on Saturday Band Nights); Sunday Brunch 10-3.

Richardson’s Café –
Located on the corner of Main St. and Church St. in historic downtown Mathews within 5 miles of the Inn. Richardson’s is a restored and remodeled historic building that was once a Rexall Drug store. Step into Richardson’s, and you will immediately feel like you are going back in time to a 50’s style diner and soda shoppe. They only play old black and white sitcoms on the TVs over the soda fountain area, (with the sound muted of course), and highlight old photographs of Mathews County downtown as well as the Counties best known former resident, 1930’s Film Actress Toby Wing. Richardson’s has a standard menu including soups, salads, sandwiches and deserts but features daily lunch and dinner specials that are quite creative while still maintaining a sense of “down home” southern diner style flair. Featuring local seafood including wonderful fried oysters, seasonal fish and crab cakes along with other favorite dishes like fried chicken, meatloaf and BBQ, this place has something for everyone. Oh yeah, don’t forget about the AWESOME homemade desserts as well as ice cream creations such as sundaes, milkshakes, cones, scoops, and floats available all day. You have to check this place out!
Hours: Mon-Tue: 11-8 Wed: 11-3 Thu: 11-8 Fri-Sat: 11-9 Sun: 11-8.

The White Dog Bistro –
Located on Church Street in historic Downtown and a short drive from our Inn, The White Dog Bistro is a true gem in our little town of Mathews. We love this restaurant! It is one of those places that is very elegant with refined food, yet evokes a very relaxed atmosphere. Fresh seafood, local produce, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free options available. The chef here is top notch, and they have won many “best of” awards from numerous publications which have all been well deserved. The White Dog is located in an old historic building that used to be one of the first hotels in Mathews County. It has been beautifully restored and remodeled and offers up all the history of the grand old hotel with the comfort and casualness that you would expect in a bayside town. With a full liquor license, there is a specialty drink menu but of course they also offer all the basics as well as top-shelf. You can be seated in one of two dining rooms, (reservations recommended), or the cozy bar with fireplace. During the warmer months, the “Wine Down Bar” is open and features a casual “Key West” theme that opens out onto the back deck where you can enjoy dinner and drinks as well as music most week ends during the Summer.
Hours: Thurs-Sunday 5:00 pm- Closing, (usually by 9 but sometimes later on week ends and band nights).

Island Stop Market –
Located right up our lane, so an easy walk or bike ride away. These people are awesome! A cute little market that offers everything from fishing gear and bait to a little wine room in the back, what we go for here the most is their food. Freshly made to order sandwiches daily as well as great crab cakes, deviled crab and other fresh seafood. Lots of sides in their little deli as well including a great loaded potato salad and kale/broccoli salad. This is the perfect place to pick up a picnic to enjoy on one of our nearby beaches or during a kayak or bike trip, or just enjoy at the Inn. They smoke their own Beef Brisket and Pork BBQ, and even offer hand tossed pizzas from Thursday through Sunday. Call ahead to pre order fresh oysters or crabs to take home with you as well.
