The Tour:
The Tour de` Chesapeake Annual Cycling Event is a cyclist’s dream ride. Mathews County is host to this event every year on the 3rd weekend in May. Between 500-600 cyclists and their families come to participate in this Tour. The weekend long event includes cycling, farmers and artisan markets, live music and fun for the whole family.
What to expect:
Flat, level roads and water views at many turns is what makes Mathews a cyclist’s dream to ride. The event plans multiple route choices that you can take. Most routes have water views and places to get out and look around. This ride also boasts amazing photo opportunities so be sure to have a camera on hand! While riding you will observe many species of birds and lots of wildlife. The wildlife in our area along the Chesapeake Bay is diverse. It would not be uncommon if you had to break for a wild turkey or deer.
Saturday is a fully supported ride with designated rest stops. Breakfast and lunch stops will also be set up at the local middle school and at Williams Wharf. A recovery yoga session will also be offered at the end ride. You will need to sign up for the breakfast and lunch stops. Private boat tours and after-ride massages will also be offered all day Saturday for a fee.
A water taxi is available from Williams Wharf (Route 614) to Mobjack (Mill Lane Road) and back. It can carry up to 6 passengers and their bikes at a time. The fee which has been 2$ in the past is taken at the boat. We think a boat ride in the middle of a bike ride is very cool! If you do not wish to take the water taxi, there is an alternate route.
What else is happening:
This festival brings activities like the Annual Art deTour hosted by the Bay School Community Arts Center and the Party at the Wharf. The Mathews Farmers Market takes place on Saturdays so if you ride into town you can shop for fresh veggies too! The Party at the Wharf is held Saturday night at Williams Wharf Landing just a few minutes from the inn. Admission to the party is free, and food and drink will be sold separately from local restaurants and other vendors.
