Garden Club of Virginia’s
Local Historic Garden Week Tours
April 20th & 21st, 2024
The Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week is this spring from April 20-27th, 2024. For this one week, visitors can tour private landscapes, public gardens and historic sites all across Virginia.
Mathews and Gloucester County Garden Tour is Saturday April 20, and also an additional property on Sunday the 21st in Gloucester. There are two tours to choose from, morning or afternoon. The morning tour is from 10am -130pm and the afternoon tour is from 130pm-5pm.
“The Gloucester-Mathews tour on Saturday includes access to three private waterfront homes whose owners have cultivated beautiful gardens and collected paintings, sculptures, and objects d’art in their travels. Visitors will want to linger and take in the variety and quality of these collections, impressive in their sheer numbers. The featured properties are River Promise (1987), Paget (1928), and the Mazzocco home (1990), all overlooking the Ware River.” (Garden Club of Va tour info)
A separate ticket allows access to the extensive Garden at Goshen in Gloucester on Sunday.
“Goshen c. 1750 has a commanding view from the head of the Ware River. Its extensive lawns and gardens comprise about 40 acres and are open for touring. The gardens range from full sun to full shade, and formal to informal. The formal gardens are reached through an allée of English boxwood and crépe myrtles. Midway down on either side is a circular planting of boxwood, to the west of which is a long shade perennial border of Lenten rose, and to the east, a sunny mixed border anchored planted with flowering quince, perennials, and annuals. Visitors will enjoy places to sit and reflect, and sculptures by renowned artists throughout the property.” ( Garden Club of Virginia tour info page)
