Local Historic Garden Week Tours

April 15, 2023

The Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Week is this spring from April 15-22. For this one week, visitors can tour private landscapes, public gardens and historic sites all across Virginia.

Mathews and Gloucester County Garden Tour is Saturday April 15, 2023. There are two tours to choose from, morning or afternoon. The morning tour is from 10am -130pm and the afternoon tour is from 130pm-5pm.

Three properties will be on the tour this year, all located in the quaint community of Ware Neck. On this years tour, you will tour gardens of an Antebellum mansion, a home in the style of a lighthouse, and a more contemporary home as well. Also on the tour is Belle Terre; a beautiful, historic and expansive garden. Ware Episcopal Church and Singleton United Methodist Church are also on the tour.

Eastham House circa 1825, historic garden tour stop
Eastham House 1825, Once known as Nottingham House, was moved from downtown Mathews to a spot on the East River.

Other Notable Stops on the tour include :

~Brent and Beckys Bulb’s: Their 8+ acre gardens contain more than 20 “rooms” to demonstrate gardening that celebrates the Chesapeake Bay! A food truck will also be parked at Brent and Beckys this day.

~New Point Lighthouse: The third oldest standing lighthouse in the Bay

~Bay School Cultural Arts Center: Will host several artist that will be painting flower arrangements!

There is much to see along the Chesapeake Bay this up and coming Spring. The weather is warming up and there will be lots to do outside. Mathews County features many historical spots and an equal amount of wildlife preserves, beaches and beautiful little spots to take in nature and its inhabitants.

Our town boasts a lovely Farmers Market on the historic court green every Saturday starting in April, so you can add that to the list of things to make a great Spring weekend in Mathews, Virginia.

Come and stay with us at the Inn during The Garden Club of Virginia’s Historic Garden Tour! You can enjoy The Garden Tour during the day, and then relax at the Inn afterwards. Tour our gardens, relax by an outdoor fire or cuddle up inside with a book.
